The origin of Foster the People
Businessweek (easily my favorite magazine):
Before Pumped Up Kicks became a top-selling single last year, Mark Foster’s greatest hit was the music in a TV commercial for Muscle Milk, a protein drink. But this year the singer-songwriter and his band, Foster the People, were nominated for two Grammys and performed live during the Feb. 12 awards telecast. For another artist, that would mean a speedy exit from the jingle-writing day job. Not Foster. He wrote most of the album’s songs while working at Mophonics, a Los Angeles company that scores TV commercials and, in a unique partnership, encouraged him to develop his outside recording career. Now that Foster has made it, Mophonics is benefiting, too, selling compositions he wrote earlier to advertisers including Cadillac (GM).More:
Foster had been waiting tables in Los Angeles for a decade when, in 2008, he met Mophonics’s Frick and partner Steph Altman, who hired the aspiring composer. When Foster arrived at Mophonics, he was shocked by how little he knew about writing music. During his first week, Foster went with Altman to pitch Nissan Motor, which wanted an electronic version of a Billie Holiday song it had licensed. “It was terrifying,” Foster says. “I didn’t read music, and I was trying to figure it out by ear.”Here's Houdini by Foster the People:

Hilltop Hoods – I Love It feat. Sia.
Music video directed by Nash Edgerton for Hilltop Hoods – I Love It featuring Sia. Good song, and an intriguing vignette about a group of adventurers.

Link roundup
1. "In describing LeBron James' season, 'great' might not even begin to do it justice. If the season ended today, his PER (player efficiency rating) of 32.6 would be the best in NBA history, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain’s 1961-62 and 1962-63 seasons."
2. A reader tells Neil Gaiman:
2. A reader tells Neil Gaiman:
I bought my niece Coraline as a gift. When I next saw her, I asked what she thought of it. She got about half-way through, then got so scared she wrapped it up in a blanket and put it in a shoe box. Then put the shobox in an empty toybox, then filled the toybox, locked it, and put it up in the attic. Which was then locked. Just thought I'd share that.3. My favorite song of the day is Fenech-Soler - Demons (Minnesota Remix). Via.

The Leningrad Cowboys

Inspektøren points out that The Leningrad Cowboys have been doing the long pointy boots for a long time now. Here they are performing Stairway to Heaven with the Red Army Alexandrov Ensemble (goofy, but I genuinely like this version):

World Tour Schedules on Google Maps
Artist / DJ Richie Hawtin has created a gorgeous looking Google Map for his current world tour. Custom map tiles have been used to give the map a distinct design. The dot-matix look of the design is continued in the custom made map markers and information windows. Dates on the tour are displayed on the map and a slide-out sidebar shows the dates in list form. The 'One City' world tour continues

Live Symphonic Balloon Tracking
London has today entered into the fantasy world of steampunk. In what seems like an episode from 2D Goggles a number of hot air balloons have been flying over London blasting out music to the populace below.Don't worry if you don't live in London or if you have missed any of the balloons' flights as you can replay it all on a handy Google Maps based application. The map shows each of the hot air

How to download music from SoundCloud
After spending so much time in stumbleupon, sometimes I stumble upon a list of AWESOME songs on Soundcloud, some of them Mashups. But their download buttons are disabled, why? Too many downloads. So, what now? You download the stream! And it is very simple!
- First step! Download THIS script.
- If you have Chrome, Here's a tutorial on how to install greasemonkey scripts.
- If you have Firefox, Here's a tutorial on how to install greasemonkey and scripts.
- If you have Opera, well, I don't know, never used it, nor did I find a video for it.
Now, go to the song you wanted to download, you should see something like this:
Right click on "Use right click save as to download" and choose "Save link as" or similar, and voila'! Enjoy!

Digsby and "Now Listening"
Ok, I love digsby, and I rarelly use this function, but when I do, it gives a link NEXT to the song's name, in case someone wants to buy it legally. I don't want that...
So I whipped up a patch that helps you "Remove" that feature.
Ok, here's how you do it! First download this :
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10333225/nowplaying.pyo
Now, Open:
Main Hard drive > Program Files Folder > digsby > lib > plugins > nowplaying
Paste in that folder the file you downloaded and that's it!
Restart Digsby, and you are done!
Enjoy
